Why a power catamaran and not a monohull

Two hulls set wide apart do one thing a single hull cannot: they keep the deck level. At anchor a power catamaran barely reacts when a group moves to one side, so plates stay on the table, children walk about, and guests who normally feel unwell at a stop simply do not. Under way you get engines rather than sails, which means the speed of a motor yacht with the stability of a multihull.

The trade is honest — two hulls meeting a swell ride harder than one, so on a rough passage a monohull of the same length is more comfortable. That is the whole choice: catamarans win at anchor, monohulls win in a seaway.

Groups from ten to eighty-five

This is the type to look at when the group is large. Pisces 85 takes eighty-five guests, the most of any power catamaran here, and Shangani takes sixty. From Chalong Pier, Scallobs 65 takes sixty and Indigo 53 Super Mario fifty-five. For ten to fifteen the smaller Leopards cost the least per day of any catamaran here.

For twenty-five to thirty, Sanyati, Zambezia and Sea Explorer. The overnight numbers are lower across the board — most of these boats sleep six to eight — so a group of thirty booking several nights should look at motor yachts instead. For a day out, though, nothing else in the catalogue puts this many people on a level deck for this money.

Speed, and which islands that opens

Power catamarans here run from eight knots to thirty at the top, and the difference decides the destination list. The faster boats from Chalong — Indigo 53 Super Mario and Sea Explorer — reach Racha Yai and Phi Phi as full days, which slower catamarans of the same capacity cannot. From Boat Lagoon Marina the Leopards work the sheltered water: Phang Nga Bay, Koh Hong, the Koh Yao islands.

Shangani at eight knots is a bay boat by design and does not attempt the southern islands. If a specific island matters more than the deck, check the speed before the price.
