The cheapest way to take a large group to sea

Two of these boats cost ฿26,000 for a low-season morning and carry thirty-five and forty guests. Divided by a full group that is the lowest figure per person anywhere in this catalogue, and it is the main reason sailing catamarans get booked for birthdays, weddings and company outings. The economics work because a sailing hull is light and the boats are older than most of the fleet: you are paying for deck space and a crew, not for a new interior or a big engine. What you get is a wide, flat platform, shade over most of it, and a day that revolves around one or two anchorages rather than a route.

Fourteen boats, and how they differ

Bohemian from ฿26,000 is built in marine aluminium for surf expeditions and takes thirty-five. Ella from ฿26,000 is a Silkline, one of four ever built, and takes forty. Calypso from ฿29,000 is the only one with a flybridge and air conditioning in the saloon, for thirty-five.

Satisfaction from ฿39,000 launched in 2024 with party lighting and a covered social deck for forty, working from Ao Po Grand Marina. Pina Colada from ฿45,000 is the only sailing catamaran here with guest cabins for overnight trips — fourteen by day, six sleeping. Sunreef 60 E-MOTION from ฿571,800 is a hybrid-electric yacht chartered on week-long itineraries and on short charters from three days; because of the level of finish and the way she is booked, she is compared on the luxury yacht page rather than here.

Nine more are newer to the catalogue. Coco and Tahaa from ฿20,900 are Fountaine Pajot catamarans for twenty from Chalong Pier, the lowest rates in this category. Senna and Pepper from ฿23,900 take thirty. Summer S and Summer V from ฿39,000 sail the west coast from Nakalay Pier in Kalim. Myra from ฿49,000 and Lagoon 56 OO7 from ฿135,000 leave from Ao Po Grand Marina and have cabins for overnight trips. Lobster 78 from ฿125,000 is a double-deck party catamaran with a DJ and a bar for up to 120.

Seven knots, and what that rules out

Almost all of them cruise at seven to eight knots. This is the single most important fact on the page, and it is worth stating plainly rather than hiding: on a day trip these boats do not go to Phi Phi. From Chalong Pier the realistic day is Coral Island, Maiton or the Racha group; from Ao Po Grand Marina it is Phang Nga Bay, Koh Hong and the Koh Yao islands; from Nakalay Pier in Kalim, the beaches and cliffs of the west coast. What sailing actually asks of you

Nothing. Every boat is chartered with a crew of three, and the rig is their job. No experience is needed and no licence.

What changes is the texture of the day: with the engine off there is no noise and no vibration, the boat leans gently, and the anchorage arrives when the wind decides rather than when the schedule says. Guests who have only chartered motor yachts often describe this as the surprise of the trip. Guests who need to be somewhere by a particular hour usually find it frustrating, and for them a motor boat is the better answer.

Overnight, and the three boats that do it

Most of these are day boats with a cabin or two for changing. Three have proper guest cabins: Pina Colada (three cabins, sleeping six), Myra (three cabins, six) and Lagoon 56 OO7 (four cabins, eight) — which is what makes a multi-day sailing trip possible without the crew living in your space. From Ao Po Grand Marina they work the sheltered bays over two or three nights, which is exactly the cruising ground a seven-knot boat is built for; Myra and OO7 also go to Phi Phi. If you want to sleep aboard with a larger group, the answer is a motor yacht rather than a sailing catamaran.
