The route follows the pier. From Chalong, Coral Island and Maiton make the short trip, with a small landing fee at Banana Beach. The Racha islands are about an hour from Chalong by speedboat, with the clearest water for snorkelling and the dive sites around Racha Noi; at the reefs the captain picks up a mooring buoy and never anchors on coral. Every trip from Phuket is skippered: a licensed captain and crew come with the boat, no licence is needed and there is no bareboat option. Overnight, shade and children

Only the Nimbus sleeps aboard, and only four people; everything else here is a day boat, and for a night at sea with a larger group the answer is one of the boats in the overnight charter guide. Shade varies from a full-length roof on LILA to none at all on the rigid inflatables, so for a long afternoon ask which one has cover before you compare prices. With small children a sailing catamaran is markedly more comfortable than a fast hull at speed; child-size life jackets are aboard, but the ride is the ride.
