Why Phang Nga starts at Ao Po, not Chalong

Phuket has four charter marinas and they do not serve the same islands. Ao Po Grand Marina sits on the north-east coast, closest to Phang Nga Bay, so a boat leaving from there is in the limestone within the first hour. From Chalong on the south coast the natural days are Coral Island, Maiton, the Racha group and Phi Phi; Phang Nga from Chalong costs hours of transit at both ends.

The bay itself is sheltered by hundreds of islands, so the water stays flat. That matters more than it sounds: on this route a slower hull is not a disadvantage, which is why the choice here comes down to deck space and headcount rather than to speed.

All nine berth at Ao Po Grand Marina. Prices are for the whole boat, not per guest, and are low-season rates: high season adds roughly a quarter and peak adds more again.

On the Galeon 500 Fly the ฿162,700 covers six guests and each additional guest is ฿2,500, to a maximum of ten. On the Astondoa 102 and the Galeon the full day is a single figure with no route split; the other seven price each route separately.

The route and the stops

• James Bond Island and Khao Phing Kan — the view the bay is known for.
• Koh Hong — lagoons closed in by rock, flat water inside.
• Koh Panak — caves and the sharpest limestone shapes in the bay.
• Koh Panyee — a village built on stilts over the water.
• Between the stops there is open bay to cruise, which is half the reason people come.

The order changes with the tide and with the group. In poor weather the captain has the final word on the route and we offer alternative cruising grounds, not a refund.

Seasons, with dates

Low season runs May to October and carries the starting rates above. High season runs November to April. Peak starts on 20 December. Its end date is set per yacht and runs from mid-January to the end of February, so read it off the rate table on the boat's page. A few boats publish a single all-year rate with a peak surcharge and no low-to-high split at all. There is no separate New Year surcharge on top of the peak rate.

Practical notes

An eight-hour day leaves in the morning and is back in the late afternoon. Tell the manager in advance if anyone needs help boarding or you are travelling with a small child, so the crew can prepare the boarding and the tender. Enquiries are answered around the clock and within an hour during working hours.

When is the sea calmest? November to April. The route runs all year and the bay is sheltered, so low-season days go ahead in conditions that would close the open-water routes.
