What a private boat tour to the Phi Phi Islands looks like

A private boat charter to Phi Phi means exclusive use of one boat: your group, the crew and nobody else aboard. Most groups leave Chalong between nine and ten in the morning and spend the day between Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Monkey Beach and the quieter sand at Nui and Bamboo Island, with Khai Nok as the usual last stop on the way home. The difference from a shared speedboat tour is control of the clock: day tour boats fill the popular bays by midday, so on a private charter you set the order and the length of every stop, and the captain tailors the itinerary to the sea and the crowds.

Day formats and what each costs

There is no half-day Phi Phi programme; half days from Chalong go to the nearer islands. The two-day version is in the overnight guide: the Astrea 42 names Phi Phi for two days and one night with up to eight guests aboard, and the Leopard 47 Myra names Phi Phi for two days as well. Itinerary: Maya Bay first, then the quieter bays

Captains make Maya Bay the first stop of the day, before the tourist boats arrive: this is the cove on Phi Phi Leh made famous by the film The Beach, and it is at its best early. Pileh Lagoon next door, flat water closed in by cliffs, is entered when the boat's draft allows, and the crew says so on the day rather than promising it. Monkey Beach and Nui on Phi Phi Don come next, then Bamboo Island with its white sand and a single anchorage on its south-east side. Where lunch is taken depends on the season, so it is not promised in advance.

Speed decides how much of the day is ashore

Speed matters more here than length. The speedboats and the Ocean Pearl are the fastest hulls on the route, most of them at 25 to 30 knots; among the larger yachts, the Azimut Atlantis cruises at twenty knots, the Sea Explorer at seventeen, the Indigo at sixteen and the F1 at fifteen to seventeen. Sofia holds fourteen knots and Say Yes eleven, which is why their Phi Phi day is planned as nine hours rather than eight, with an earlier start and fewer, longer stops; what the two motor yachts give in exchange is shade, a saloon and a proper foredeck.

Snorkelling, coral reefs and the marine park fee

Phi Phi is a snorkelling day rather than a dive trip: masks, snorkels and fins are on board, the captain chooses the snorkel stops on the day, and at every reef he picks up a mooring buoy and never anchors on coral. Scuba is not part of the programme. The islands sit inside a marine national park. On most boats the park fee is paid separately on the day, per person; where the rate includes it, as on the Bertram and the Azimut Atlantis, the yacht's page says so. Phi Phi or Phang Nga Bay: the two main attractions in Phuket's waters

Phi Phi is one of the two best-known attractions in Phuket's waters and the longest full day from Chalong. Seasons, booking and cancellation

Low season, May to October, carries the starting rates in the tables; high season runs November to April. Peak dates differ by boat, from mid-December into January or February, and are shown on each boat's page; there is no separate New Year surcharge on top of peak. Booking is by WhatsApp or email. Most boats take a deposit of half the charter price with the balance before departure; some are paid in full at booking; late cancellation is non-refundable, and the exact terms are on each boat's page and the terms page.
